THE POMEDY SHOW – UK Autumn Tour 2011 Launch Event
After several highly successful and critically acclaimed stagings in Jamaica, the POEMDY Show made its international premier and historic UK Tour launch on Friday October 14th at the Broadway Theatre, Catford in London. The POMEDY Show has the honour of having His Excellency Anthony Johnson, the Jamaican High Commissioner, as its Patron.
The hilarious and inspirational Jamaican Pomedy Show was first staged at its world premier in Jamaica in June 2009. The proceeds went towards the St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) computer lab as this is the alma mater of YASUS AFARI who created and developed the POMEDY Show.
The launch event of the UK Tour was hosted by Dr. Lez Henry and started right on time at 8pm, signalling the continued commitment to punctuality, professional conduct and high quality presentation for the entire family.
All the artistes were in fine form, giving excellent performances which were well received with laughter and jubilation by a very receptive and excited crowd of mainly Jamaicans. Sedgehill School Poetry Group started the show recognising Black History as our Shared History, followed by their Dance Group and a solo singer. The Jamaican High Commissioner, His Excellency Anthony Johnson, then followed with his motivational presentation, congratulating the team on bringing the show to the UK. He was followed by youthful Naomi Francis with her unique rap style, poet David Neita and the hilarious Ping Wing, who was in fine form.
After a short intermission, the one and only Joan Andrea Hutchinson, Jamaica’s Cultural Comedian and Humourist, gave an excellent, funny and thought provoking performance which was very well received. The POMEDY Show founder YASUS AFARI, then brought this much heralded event to the climax with an uplifting and edutaining set that brought the evening to an inspirational close. Thanks were given to lead sponsor Western Union, the Gleaner, Voice and other sponsors, as well as the team who worked so hard to promote and stage this very special event.
The next opportunity to catch the UK POMEDY Tour will be at the Drum in Birmingham on Friday 21st October, then the show is featured in the Wales Black History Month Finale programme at the Millennium Centre, before the evening presentation at the Burleigh Academy in Newport, Gwent. The POMEDY Show is also to be staged at the Arena Theatre in Wolverhampton on November 5th, with the possibility of more shows being staged as the word spreads around UK.
